The role of AI in creative writing: can AI writing generate stories?

AI writing is a revolutionary tool in the writing industry: it can generate a large number of copies at a fast speed, help with ideas and analyze a big amount of data. AI-generated copies in extremely useful in marketing and business, assistance of these tools can even be used in journalism. But can AI be useful in creative writing?

Creative writing is a form of writing where humans use their creativity and imagination to create content. This differs from academic, technical, statistical writing, and journalism. Everything that is produced based on creativity rather than facts and statistics is creative writing. Some examples are:

  • Poetry;
  • Books, novels, and stories;
  • Scripts for TV and other visual content;
  • Plays;
  • Songs, etc.

Since AI writing is considered a tool that lacks emotions and creativity (for now), the question is can it be useful in creative writing? The answer is yes. AI’s assistance is basically related to generating ideas. Look at the examples below:

  • AI can suggest novel ideas. Since it can analyze a lot of data, it may suggest novel ideas that do not occur to the author. This is done by identifying patterns, structures, and plotlines;
  • AI can interact with the author. AI can communicate with the author through chatbots. If the author lacks inspiration, AI can ask about something like his favorite genre and provide the themes or plotlines based on the author’s responses;
  • AI can create new stories. By analyzing existing stories, it can create new ones. Usually, their plots include particular elements that are relevant to a specific genre.  However, these stories may not be perfect, but they can inspire humans to think of something new.

What else AI can do in creative writing?

Grammar and spelling checking is closely related to AI writing – every writer should create highly readable content without grammatical mistakes and flaws. In fact, AI writing’s roots are spelling checkers.

In creative writing and any type of writing, grammar and spelling checkers can save a lot of time in the editing process. A lot of tools make suggestions to your writing, so they can even improve content’s readability by identifying flaws and suggesting different words, sentence structures, and phrasing. This can provide clarity, and improve coherence and engagement. In this way, your content becomes more readable.

However, they are not always correct, and human judgment is needed. The author is responsible for his or her content, so the ultimate decision of whether to use other words or phrasing depends on him or her.
